Icon Writer’s Prayer

Priest: Blessed is our God, always now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.

Leader: Through the prayers of our holy fathers, Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us.

All: Amen.

Glory to Thee, O Lord, our God, glory to Thee!

O Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, Who art everywhere and fillest all things; Treasury of Blessings, and Giver of Life – come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every impurity, and save our souls, O Good One.

Holy God! Holy Mighty! Holy Immortal! Have mercy on us. (3x)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

O most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, cleanse us from our sins. O Master, pardon our transgressions. O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name’s sake.

Lord, have mercy. (3x)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Priest: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.

Leader: Through the prayers of our holy fathers, Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us.

All: Amen.

Priest: Let us pray to the Lord.

All: Lord, have mercy.

Priest: O Divine Lord of all existence, Thou didst enable Thine Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke, through the illumination of the Holy Spirit, to represent in iconography Thine All-Holy Mother, who didst bear Thee in her arms and proclaim: The Grace of Him Who has been born of me is spread through the world!

Guide the hands of me, Thine unworthy creature, in this present task to the venerable portrayal of Thine Image for the glory and adornment of Thy Church. Direct my heart and soul, and grant unto me noetic illumination. Grant unto me, and those that venerate this holy icon in honor, whom it represents (Name of Icon or Saint), restoration from sin. Through the proper veneration of the icons instruct us with Thy good counsel, and deliver us from evil. Through the proper veneration of the icons instruct us with Thy good counsel, and deliver us from evil.

Through the intercessions of the Most Pure Mother, the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary; the Holy, Glorious and All-Laudable Apostle and Evangelist Luke, the Proto-Iconographer; our venerable and God-bearing Fathers, the Holy Iconographers, Sts. Lazaros of Constantinople, Alipij and Gregorij of the Kiev Caves, and Andrei Rublev; the Holy Martyrs and Confessors for the Veneration of the Holy Icons (our venerable Mother, St. Theodosia of Constantinople; our Holy Fathers among the Saints, the Holy Patriarchs of Constantinople: Germanos, Tarasios, Nikephoros the Confessor and Methodios the Confessor); The Holy Teachers of Iconology (our Holy Fathers among the Saints: Hierotheos of Athens, Dionysios the Areopagite, Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, Gregory of Nyssa and Gregory Palamas); our Venerable and God-bearing Fathers, Saints: John of Damascus, Theodore the Studite, Maximos the Confessor and Symeon the New Theologian; and all the Saints. For Thou art our Illumination, and we send up glory unto Thee, together with Thine unoriginate Father, and Thy Most-Holy, Good, and Life-giving Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.

All: Amen.

Priest: Wisdom!

All: More honorable than the Cherubim and more glorious beyond compare than the Seraphim, who without corruption gavest birth to God the Word, Thee, The Theotokos, do we magnify.

Priest: Glory to Thee, O Lord, our God, glory to Thee!

All: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Lord, have mercy. (3x)

Father, bless. (or, if a priest is not present: O Lord, bless)

Priest: May Christ, our true God, through the intercessions of His most pure Mother by the power of the precious and life-giving Cross, through the power of the bodiless heavenly hosts, through the supplications of the holy, glorious and all-laudable Apostle and Evangelist Luke, our venerable and God-bearing Father, St. Andrei Rublev, and, of all the saints, have mercy on us, and save us.

All: Amen.
